foshan
Intercontinental Hotel, Foshan, China
I wrote this last December, while in Foshan, China. I remember being upset about going home and I was just walking around when I stopped and wrote this on my phone, not moving until it was finished. I felt very motivated to say something.
Walking around Foshan, China after 4 weeks spent traveling around China, I was lost in thought. Every city I visited was amazing and growing and unique. The level or wealth and luxury is incredible. Incredible.
Let me just listen to some Cardi B “Be Careful” and let it soak in. I will be returning to the United States tomorrow and my greatest hope is that I find someone interested in talking about the real China, not the one we learn about in America.
I remember when Richard Nixon visited China in 1972. Relations were normalized 40 years ago last Saturday. Prior to that day there was no Costco, no Walmart, no “Made in China” to be found in the USA, except perhaps for expensive porcelain dolls and serving ware.
We can choose to learn about China now. Probably our best friend in the world. Or we can close our eyes and be taught later. This Saturday I will meet 6lack in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. A small town few have heard of here. He knows how to connect with people. He knows how to share feelings and survive the nasty haters who don’t care to appreciate. Next I want to find a way to meet more of my heroes – Ai Wei Wei and Elim Chan for example. Don’t know who they are? I challenge you to learn. I’m 60 now, too old to just wait around for the world to change for the better. Waiting does nothing. I’m tired and emotional and a little off balance here amid the thousands of years of history and the most beautiful art and architecture I have ever seen. And a little mad at the lies I’ve been told. But I don’t need anyone to help me – I’m asking for you to join me!
